吉普赛人起源于印度北部，是散居全世界的流浪民族。吉普赛人以其神秘的形象著称，历史上多从事占卜、歌舞等职业。但吉普赛人也因为流浪与贫穷的生活所演化出的特殊生活方式与求生方法而长期遭受歧视和迫害。吉普赛音乐着重使用高音符以及音符之间大跨度的滑动，歌唱以其情感丰富而著称，吉普赛人也是西班牙盛行的弗拉明戈舞的主要源头之一。
吉普赛的音乐总是让人联想到流浪、大篷车、破旧、逝去等字眼，欢快与悲伤两级分化较为严重。
